The island of Crete is known for healthy cuisine, based on the Mediterranean diet and contains olive oil, legumes, spicy cheese, Cretan nut, fish and sweets with honey and meals accompanied by wine, and local raki.Traditional dishes served in restaurants are Chochlioi, Kakkavia-genuine-fish soup, salad with sea urchins, Dakos, gamopilafo, kaltsounia-sweet snack with Cretan honey-and French pastry.
In Chania there are many choices for food, from snack bars that offer authentic dishes at affordable prices to expensive restaurants in exceptional locations with view and dishes inspired by the Cretan cuisine and prices higher than average. There are, however, and traditional 'tavernas'-restaurants with seafood or other delicacies, at picturesque locations where you may enjoy your meal under the sounds of traditional Greek music.
