Chania is not only a city with the most amazing beaches but it is also considered to be one of the most traditional ones. When in Crete, like in every other island in Greece, you will be amazed by the hospitality and warmth of the locals. However it is very essential to be aware of the basic things that will get you through your holidays and will make them the most precious memories!

One of the most basic things you will need to know is that when eating out, you will get free desert at the end of your meal, so if you do listen to the word “kerasma” put on a big smile. This is the way of the locals to show you how thankful they are that you chose their restaurant or tavern and it is also a way to please you.

If you intend to buy a few souvenirs from the touristic shops the opening hours are almost all day long (until 10 o’clock at night) but if you wish to buy the essential you will find the majority of the super markets operating from 8:00 am to 13:30 and from 17:00 until 20:00. For your cash exchanges you will find the banks operating on the week days from Monday to Thursday 8:00-14:30 and Friday 8:00-14:00.

When driving in Chania -like in the whole of Greece- in most of the cases you will see that the speed limits do not exceed 50km/h within residential areas and 80km/h in other places.

If there is any sort of complaints or problems that you face, contact the Tourist Police by calling 171 that will be happy to assist you and make you feel like at home. Finally, the prefix for dialing Chania is +30 28210.
